Teaching and Teamwork at Green Lake
by Frashia Njenga
Tuesday, June 10, marked a special moment in my short but growing journey with the literature distribution team: I had the chance to guide DeWitt John Makengo, who is doing a digital media outreach internshp at Third Church this summer. This was his very first day ever doing outreach with The Christian Science Monitor Weekly.

Before we headed out, I gave DeWitt a quick rundown of how we approach distribution…what to expect, how to engage with people, and how to make the most of the experience. When I asked how many copies he felt comfortable handing out, he chose a confident 25. Not bad for a first-timer!
By around 2:00 p.m., we were on our way to the East Green Lake commercial district of Seattle. We caught the bus and, before long, found ourselves stepping into a new neighborhood with fresh energy and fresh faces. The weather was noticeably cooler than the day before, still pleasant, just enough to make the walking more enjoyable.
For me, it was a day of teaching, which felt both surprising and satisfying. I’ve only been at this job for two weeks, but getting to help someone else find their footing made me realize how much I’ve already learned. And it reminded me that sharing knowledge, even in small ways, can be just as impactful as distributing a magazine.
Together, DeWitt and I handed out every last copy we brought. It was a quiet kind of success, but one that left both of us with a sense of purpose and possibility.
It’s days like these that make me appreciate the rhythm of this work: each outing brings new conversations, new lessons, and a deeper connection to the people and places we reach. I’m excited to see where the next stop takes us.
