A Warm Day of Outreach at the U District Farmers Market

by Frashia Njenga

Saturday, June 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., we had the opportunity to table at the University District Farmers Market, as a different way to distribute sample copies of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly. It was a hot day, but the sunshine brought out a great crowd, and it was a real treat to be outside, surrounded by the energy of the market and the vibrance of the community.

We set up and also had the chance to explore the offerings from local vendors everything from fresh produce to artisan goods. We even got to sample a few delicious items ourselves, which was a nice perk of the day. But the highlight was definitely the people.

At one point, a man approached us with a big smile and said he loved the work we were doing. Curious, I asked if he was a member of the Church. He said he wasn’t, but had attended a few services and had visited the Reading Room. He picked up a magazine and thanked us before heading on his way—one of those small but meaningful moments that remind us of the reach and relevance of our message.

Another man recognized The Monitor immediately. He came right up to our table, visibly excited, and started chatting enthusiastically with his friend about it. It was clear the publication had left an impression on him. He eagerly grabbed a copy to take home.

Encounters like these really bring the purpose of our outreach to life. Whether it’s a familiar reader or someone who’s just discovering The Monitor for the first time, each interaction opens a door—a chance to connect, to share, and to inspire thought.

All in all, it was a good day—full of sunshine, genuine conversations, and a sense of community. We’re grateful for every person who stopped by, and we look forward to more opportunities to share the thoughtful journalism and spiritual perspective that The Christian Science Monitor offers.
