Seeing the big picture at Wallingford Farmers Market
By Izzy Marvin
Hello everyone! Today, Wednesday July 17th, I was at the Wallingford farmers market giving out sample copies of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly.
Before I left for the market I had a meeting in the morning with Cindy Safronoff as well as a partial meeting with Cindy O. and Lusho! It was great to get my daily armor on alongside the girls because I haven't been able to do it in so long!
After the morning meeting I wrote my Renton Blog and started to think about an upcoming video. I started planning what I wanted the end of the summer video to be for my farmers market project and let me tell you, SO much goes into it! Although I was unable to complete a plan for the video I was able to come up with a general idea of how I wanted it to go.
Finally it was time to head to the market! Once I arrived at the market and got set up I offered a sample copy to a couple walking by and they took it right away! They said they had seen it before and had seen the Christian Science Church on University way, aka The Ave, in the University District. It was really cool to see them make the connection. I made sure to tell them that what I was offering was non-religious material.
A little later on, I offered an older woman a sample copy and she came over to my station. She said she was familiar with The Monitor and said “That is a wonderful news source! I used to read it all of the time”. She did not take a copy right away but grabbed one on her way out of the market!
A man later approached me that I recognized. I had spoken to him before at the market and he had previously taken a sample copy or two and told me that he would come back for a subscription. I told him that I recognized him and he took another sample copy and said he would sign up online for a subscription but he wanted to talk to his wife first.
Right after this I offered a man a sample copy and he came up to me. He looked at the copies I had on my table and said “Ohh, Christian Science. No thank you”. I assured him that the magazines were solely news magazines but he just shook his head. Encounters like this are always difficult because even if I explain the history behind The Monitor people think I am trying to trick them.
A while later a family with a young daughter and son approached me and grabbed the sample copy titled, “Raising Boys to be Caring and Strong” and one other copy. When families take sample copies they usually go for this edition because they can relate to it.
In total I was able to give out 5 sample copies which is more than last Wednesday! I look forward to attending this market one final time next week. Stay tuned for the Blog!
