West Seattle: Beautiful, but hard to reach

By Cindy Obi-Njoku

Hello, dear reader. Cindy here again. On the Thursday of our second week, we visited West Seattle.

The trip was split into two, first to Alki beach and then to North Admiral. When we got to Alki beach, the area was serene and there was a lovely view of the Puget Sound. Parents and their wards happily played on the beach as the weather was lovely that day.

We walked along the streets overlooking the beach and we noticed that there were not that many establishments in the area to distribute to and a good number of the ones present were not so receptive. There were a few establishments open to receiving copies from us, but none open to accepting gift subscriptions. We observed that many of the establishments along the beach had policies that do not accommodate our offer. Also, a good number of shops along the beach had a “No Soliciting” sign on their door, so we went past those. I find it important to note that the beach had a good number of bars and at the time we were under the impression that we should not advertise in bars. Due to this, we skipped those too.

Before we left the beach, we sat for a few minutes by the beach basking in the sun and with renewed optimism, we left for North Admiral. The establishments here were quite spread out, but the receptivity was slightly better. We gave copies to a few establishments and placed one gift subscription in this area.

Although we did not get as many subscriptions as we would have loved to, I have learnt to keep an open mind and accept that every place will be different.
