Spiritual Reflections
By Bella Sison
We spent Tuesday and Wednesday of this week focused on metaphysical reflection. Tuesday was dedicated to prayerfully considering our spiritual identities. I used Christian Science Reading Room resources, including concordances to The Bible and Science & Health, to research ideas related to spiritual treatment. Then I brainstormed all the qualities I could come up with related to my true identity as a child of God. I also broke this down into different areas of my life, such as school, work, and relationships. I considered the spiritual truths I know about myself in all of these circumstances, as well as some material suggestions (and their spiritual contradictions) that may be attached to these roles. By doing this, I was able to feel a sense of warm comfort in affirming what is true about me spiritually. These qualities apply both to my job here and to my personal life, and it's essential to start everything from this foundation of my spiritual identity.
On Wednesday, we focused on praying about the “Compass the City” project and the Monitor. I started by looking up everything Mary Baker Eddy said about the Monitor (using Concord Online), including its statement of purpose. I researched some of these words in the Webster's 1828 Dictionary to gain a better understanding of how Mrs. Eddy likely meant to use those words. Then I prayerfully considered some of her other quotes about the Monitor, which focused on its need in the community and its goals. By spending this time in spiritual focus, I feel that I've gained a deeper understanding of our purpose as an organization and the need for the Monitor in the community. On a personal level, I've also developed a deeper appreciation for the Monitor. I believe it's important to let it bring our attention to global situations that need our prayerful support, rather than simply being news to read passively.
