Izzy Marvin’s Second Summer in Seattle as an Business Intern
By Izzy Marvin
Izzy Marvin, who was on the “Compass the City” 2022 outreach team, decided to come back again this summer of 2023. Izzy made the decision to come back and assist in this project again because she feels it holds a strong level of importance. Izzy is aware of the history of The Christian Science Monitor and values what it stands for and its literary perspective and believes it is important that the popularity of this news source grows again. In addition to this, Izzy felt there was so much more she wanted to accomplish in this project.
Izzy Marvin will be a Senior at Principia College this fall
Since Izzy was one of the first individuals to work on this project, she has assisted in the development of it and wished to continue in that role. Since Izzy received much experience last summer, there are many things she has seen that could be improved such as the organization and additional sections that could be added to improve the project’s effectiveness. Izzy holds a passion for improving and further developing this project and feels it is like “her baby” in the sense she has helped this project grow and wants to continue to nourish it.
If Izzy had one wish for this project she would wish for this project to highly impact many people she comes in contact with as well as impact the CS community and urge them to see the importance of this project and want to contribute in any way they can. Izzy loves the Seattle area with a passion and loves working with project manager Cindy Safronoff, (who she affectionately calls “Cindy Gir!”) She is so grateful for all of the connections she has made between last summer and this summer and is so excited to continue to meet new people in the Christian Science community as well as others in the various sections of Seattle she visits.
Business Internship for Principia College
This year we have Izzy Marvin working as an intern for part of the outreach project this summer. Working as an intern holds a few differences than working as an outreach worker. Since Izzy is a business major at Principia College, she focuses on more of the business aspects of our outreach project. Izzy focuses on a long list of activities including the following:
Outside Sales: consisting of the visitation of retail businesses in various commercial areas.
In-Person Verbal Skills: creating and refining sales pitches and persuasion skills in consolidation with experienced local professionals.
Inside Sales: making cold calls by following up with calls and letters to prospects and placements.
Direct Mail Marketing: creating lists of target organizations (ex. non-profit organizations, Native American Tribal organizations, Fire Stations, etc)
Financial Management: track the projects expenses and make recommendations in order to stay within the projects budget.
Administration: handling paperwork for submitting gift subscriptions.
Employee Training: training new team members and volunteers based on previous work experience.
Documentation and Recommendations: create written and video communications to urge others to do similar Monitor Weekly promotions by sharing what worked, what didn’t work, and return on investment. In addition, compare the effectiveness of in-person visits or direct mail exchanges and make recommendations for future projects.
Project Promotion and Worker Recruitment: create and publish blog articles about the progression of the project to spread awareness and support via additional funding, recruitment, and extra volunteer support.
