Kent: The Highly Eventful Record Breaker
By Cindy Obi-Njoku
Hello dear reader, Cindy here. On Wednesday, the 3rd of July, Lusho and I went to Kent, and Lord was it eventful. On our arrival, we went to the Christian Science reading room where we were met by Katie, Vicki and Ricky. They welcomed us with open arms and assured us that they were praying for us as the previous teams had never placed a gift subscription in Kent. They also suggested places for us to distribute copies of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly and that was really helpful.
After our reading room visit, we went right to work. While working, I saw more African Americans than any of the other cities we had been to. At one of the cafés we gave copies to, we met a woman who thought she knew me. We exchanged pleasantries, she wished us well on our endeavour and took a copy of The Monitor.
Halfway through work, we decided to have lunch. We had our sights set for a Kenyan restaurant in the area called Rafiki, but before that Lusho wanted to try food truck tacos. While crossing to the food truck, our range of vision was obstructed by a parked car, so Lusho almost got hit by a car (key word: almost). We laughed at the situation and devoured our tacos picnic-style in Kaibara Park. Once we were done with our tasty appetiser, we went to the Kenyan restaurant. We both ordered Mbuzi Choma (“marinated chunks of chargrilled goat meat served with collard greens”) with Chapati (flat bread) and meat gravy. This was my first time trying Kenyan goat meat and it was scrumptious.
On our way back from lunch, we stopped at a bakery close-by to inquire about the price of their sourdough bread and to our surprise they gave us two free loaves of bread. It was so unexpected and amusing; we called Cindy to inform her.
After these events, we continued working and when we were done, we met with Ms. Bonnie Demaree who offered to give us a tour of Sunrise Haven, the Christian Science Nursing Facility in Kent. On our arrival, I noticed how beautiful and serene the surrounding was. Bonnie let us into the building and gave us a lovely tour of the spaces and facilities in and out of the building. There were lots of flowers around and I really admired the greenery and pristine condition of the place.
We enjoyed tasty blackberries from the garden. After the tour, Bonnie drove us back home.
This particular outreach is one of those I doubt I will forget easily. It was so eventful and humorous. Best of all, we broke the Kent record by securing three gift subscriptions.
