Mixing it up at UD Farmers Market
By Frashia Njenga
On Saturday, June 14, I found myself once again at the buzzing U District Farmers Market, one of Seattle’s finest weekend adventures. This time, it was a fun collaboration between the Reading Room crew and the Outreach team. Double the people, double the joy and magazine stacks!
Armed with copies of the Christian Science Monitor, we set up our table and settled into the hum of market life. Between handing out magazines and chatting with curious passersby, we sampled some new foods and soaked in the energy of the crowd.
There was music drifting through the stalls, a mix of guitars, laughter, and sizzling skillets. The smells were everything, warm bread, fresh flowers, maybe even a hint of rain in the air.
It wasn’t just outreach, it was a full-on sensory experience. The kind of day that reminds you why community matters.

Altogether, there are 5 summer interns working from Third Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, this summer. Three of them are doing outreach work at the Reading Room. Because of the amazing opportunity of the Saturday Farmers Market in the street right in front of Third Church, they are all working Saturdays this summer.
Acadia Vance, DeWitt John Makengo, Frashia Njenga, Lusho Hamiliki, and Ellie Pierce, CS outreach workers, at U-District Farmers Market
We planned to have Frashia and Acadia manning a Monitor table on the sidewalk, while Lusho, Ellie, and DeWitt stayed in the Reading Room. But on Saturday, June 14, Acadia had a quiet day in the Reading Room, while Frashi worked the street corner Monitor table.
All three of the Third Church Reading Room interns took a turn sitting at the Monitor table with Frashia. Call it subbing, or cross training, or whatever you like, while the interns each have a designated role this summer, they seem to enjoy having some interchangability.
