Campus Conversations: Monitor table at UW

By Acadia Vance

On Wednesday, June 4, Frashia and I went to the University of Washington campus with Ellie and Lusho, the Third Church Reading Room Interns.

We set up a table near the Student Union Building and handed out a couple Christian Science Monitor Weekly's to about 3 students who stopped by. I noticed quite a few people glanced over, curious, but then quickly looked away and rushed off to their next classes. It’s interesting how busy campus life gets, and how fleeting those moments of curiosity are.

We also received some helpful feedback from the students who did stop by the table to chat. Two of them mentioned that food or music might help draw more attention to our table in the future. It’s a simple but valuable insight, and one we’ll definitely keep in mind for next time.

Afterwards, we moved inside the Student Union Building, passing out monitors there and then made our way to the Suzzallo Library, passing out more Monitors in the seating and study areas. We didn’t hand out every single one, we had about 5-10 monitors left, but we got most of them out. It felt good to connect, even in small ways, and share what we’re doing with the campus community.

Day four was a shorter day, but still a meaningful one. We headed over to the University of Washington (UW) campus to table and get the Monitor in front of students.

We set up in a few of the school’s hotspots—places with good foot traffic and energy—and got to work. It wasn’t as high-volume as some of the previous days, but we had some great one-on-one conversations, which reminded us that sometimes quality matters more than quantity.

Students were curious, engaged, and open to hearing what the Monitor is all about. We were able to distribute in key areas and plant seeds that could grow into more interest down the line.

A lighter day, but still a solid step forward.
